Project Brief

I landed a job for a property management company in 2016 to redesign their website. The company while being well established in the area for more than 30 years had managed to let their website take a back seat in favor of a more traditional approach to customer interactions.

The Challenge

When I started with the company, the website was in a basic HTML/PHP format that was used primarily for two things, browsing properties and finding the company contact information. The old site created a entire workflow for the employees that would also need to be tweaked to fit the upgraded sites new features.

The Solution

Success was measured using social media responses, SEO analytics and customer feedback. I was able to see a steady rise in website traffic over 6 months. Initial traffic from the old site showed average daily use was around 30 people per day during peak season. After launch the average daily use climbed to 120 users during peak season, which converts to a 300% increase in website traffic. After 1 year the medium daily use showed around 130 visitors daily, year round.

Using the Airbnb model, I retook pictures of nearly every property.

Every page and image was resized and tagged for SEO performance.

I didn’t just change the logo, I rebuilt their entire digital footprint.

Repurposing valuable space to give clients the most important information upfront.

I created a template style guide to give renters the most important information at a glance. After talking with prospective renters I found that the top considerations when renting a home are price, location, and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

  • Monthly rental rate

Listings Details

Making use of the white space and established patterns to help users navigate the page more easily.

Following a similar pattern from the listing tiles, I expanded the template guide to include a detailed description that is also broken down into bullet points for easy scanning of the most important details. I also optimized the listing photos, which were prone to timeout due to their size.

Detailed Listing Style Guide:

  • Street name: Neighborhood
  • City and State (for SEO)
  • Monthly rental rate
  • # Beds, # Baths
  • Front of the home picture (Hero image)
  • Thumbnails pictures for the slider (organized like a walk-through tour)
  • Price clarified with lease period.
  • Highlights (one or two sentences)
  • Amenities  (one paragraph tops)
  • Pet policy
  • Lease terms
  • A bulleted list of rental features

Special Promotional Videos for Select Properties

Drone videos were used to market select properties through social media. The videos also served as a guided tour for prospective renters unable to drive around to each property.
